Introduction:
Valsiure, a patient advocacy company out of New Haven, Conneticut, recently tested 78 sunscreen and after-sun care products for benzene, an industrial chemical know to cause cancer and other possible health problems. Benzene is a colorless chemical at room temperature and is used primarily as a solvent in the pharmaceutical industry.
According to the CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), the World Health Organization and other regulatory agencies, benzene is known to cause cancer in humans, specifically blood cancers such as leukemia. Decades of research has shown that regular exposure to benzene, at concentrations of 1 ppm, or even lower, may potentially lead to the development of cancers.
